My new comic project Snow and the Samurai goes live this Holiday Weekend Christmas 2011.
It will be an exclusively online webcomic that will be updated every week until the story is complete.
Snow and the Samurai is a supernatural revenge story that takes place in a fantasy realm with magic and samurai.
While the title character is named Snow, like Snow White, you’ll soon discover that my story is not exactly based on the Snow White fairy tale. It’s kind of an anti-fairy tale.
This has been a story I’ve been wanting to do for many years. Originally I wrote it as a film treatment that I registered with the WGA in 2002 as The Legend of Snow White. Finally, I can share it with everyone in comicbook form. I haven’t done comics in years since working on Iron Wings and David and Goliath both published by Image Comics. So it’s actually lots of fun to be writing and illustrating comics again.
Releasing it in this online format is new to me and is an exciting experiment so that everyone can have a chance to enjoy it. I hope you will read it, follow it and share it with everyone you know. You can read it from the beginning here: Snow and the Samurai: Chapter One Thanks!
Two undercover Assassins attend a Masquerade Ball and only one will leave alive.
I just thought Venetian masks would be a perfect fit if the worlds of James Bond met Spy Vs Spy met Sin City.
Black and white with no color, because I wanted to humbly pay tribute to some of my favorite artists that have used black and white masterfully, like Alex Toth, Will Eisner, Mike Mignola and Frank Miller to name a few.
i rarely read comics anymore, i find it hard to keep up with all the crazy crossovers, continuity and forever ongoing story lines, but kick-ass is a great, self-contained series. only seven issues to date, but finally the last issue is scheduled to come out 1/27 on wednesday.
hitgirl and kickass
this book is surprisingly graphic and violent considering it is drawn by john romita jr., one of my favorite artists, whose work i grew up on in spider-man, daredevil, iron man and x-men. i guess he did do punisher for a while, which is more violent. but kick-ass is a refreshingly original take on the tired super-hero genre and believe me, that’s hard to do. and jr jr. is a classic, master storyteller and focuses more on storytelling than flashy pin-up style artwork which is rare these days among the younger comic artists. mike millar’s writing is smart, funny and walks that fine line of cool and outrageous. the plot is solid and certainly holds my interest.
congrats to mike millar and john romita jr. for a quality series.
i hope the new film coming out in the spring based on their comic does it justice and is a hit at the box office. i’m just curious if they are going to keep it as graphically violent as the comic.
I love this film. so suspenseful! everyone must watch this. best film about modern warfare in the middle east. all the other ones like jarhead are forgettable. but this is going to be a classic. new found respect for director kathryn bigelow.
the last nick hornby book i read was in 2005: “a long way down”. i remember getting it the day it came out and reading it in one-two sittings.
nick hornby is known for books like “high fidelity”, “about a boy” and “fever pitch”, which all got turned into films.
but he just popped into my head today and i started to wonder if he had written anything new.
to my surprise, he had come out with two books since i last checked!
a novel called “slam” in 2007 and a brand new book, “juliet, naked” just three months ago. i guess it’s pretty clear i’m not exactly keeping track of the latest book releases. plus, 2007-2009 has been a crazy distracting period for me.
so i just ordered both of them in hardcover! and i’m glad “slam” is still available in hardcover even though it’s from 2007.
i have a thing about preferring to read hardcover books over the paperback format. the print is larger and easier to read and the book’s spine and cover won’t get all cracked and scratched after one reading. this habit about book quality probably started with my obsessive comicbook collecting when i was younger. i liked keeping my books in good condition and while i’m not that anal or much of a collector of things anymore, some old habits die hard.
anyway, i’m excited to do some serious catching up. it’s been too long since i read something from one of my favorite contemporary writers.
i checked out the “pim and francie” hardcover art book at barnes and noble. i want to add this to my art book collection. the drawings are just beautiful and the black and white line work is skillful.
it looks pretty innocent on the cover but inside it has some strange subject matter, nothing perverse, but very weird. which is probably why it stood out to me.
the old school cartoon style envokes memories of classic Disney and cartoon strips from our childhood and even more so from our parent’s childhood. but take those dreamlike images and twist it into a LSD nightmare. and i mean that as a compliment.
zombies. dismembered body parts. but i was really disturbed by a smiley faced guy that dices pim on a kitchen cutting board and dropping francie in a meat grinder, labeled kiddie grinder. uuuh crazy.
the only thing i wish the book had was some narrative or something to explain the strange images.
but the artwork is beautiful and original. definitely something i would want on my bookshelf.
just tried the newly opened “mark” on st. marks place. i was craving a burger but i had yet to find any burgers worth mentioning in my area.
i tried “paul’s burger place”, also on st. marks, which boasts to be the best burger in ny. -LIES! it was a sloppy tasteless mess.
anyway, i had been passing by mark for a few weeks now since it opened in october, but it didn’t look like anything special.
finally, i decided to give it a try since I tend to like sliders cause they’re so bite sized and easy to eat. and for 2 bucks a pop, it was worth a try! they also had hoegarden on tap and a few other decent beers for only $4! it wasn’t even happy hour!
anyway, i had two sliders, fries and a malted milkshake. all really good!
only one month old but i know this place is going to be super popular. there’s so much crap on st marks that it’s easy to walk by this place and not notice it, but when you have quality tasting food at fair prices, it’s a no brainer. people will find out and come!
i just hope they keep the prices as they are. i’m definitely gonna be a regular here.
mark is located on 33 st. marks place between 2nd and 3rd ave. just look for the statue of a white bull.
i forgot to take pictures cause when the food came i just dived right in. i’ll take some next time!
it’s raining today even though all week the weather report said it was going to be clear today.
after living in rainless LA for eight years i don’t mind a little rain but what i do mind is “cold” rain.
in the summer, when it’s hot and humid it’s kind of fun and refreshing, just wearing a t shirt and shorts and walking or running through the rain without an umbrella. weeeeee!
but with cold rain you’re already cold, so you’re wearing more clothes, which leaves you wet, uncomfortable and still cold.
i’d rather it just snow already. at least it’s pretty.
